What’s New at CJL
Sports Courts on the Campus
We are very pleased to announce that the vacant parking lot at the future Campus for Jewish Life site at 901 San Antonio Road is vacant no longer. The site has been converted into temporary sport courts for use by the JCC, as well as by several schools and community groups. There are now two regulation basketball courts, three volleyball courts, two inline hockey rinks and a kickball/t-ball field. The site can also accommodate parking for players and guests. There are picnic benches, trash bins and a secure storage shed to handle equipment. All the equipment is new and the courts are newly leveled, resurfaced and freshly striped. Portable restrooms will also be available.
The JCC is planning a variety of programs on the new courts, including basketball camps, roller hockey classes, as well as sports tournaments. In addition, the new courts will be used for the February 27th Maccabi Game tryouts.
JCC Appoints New Director of Sports, Camp and Recreation
Tracy Schuleman is the JCC’s new director of sports, camp and recreation, with responsibility for developing sports programming for the JCC. Tracy comes to Palo Alto from the Memphis Tennessee JCC, where she worked for 18 years as sports and fitness director. When asked why she decided to leave Memphis for Palo Alto, Tracy responded, “This is a great move for me. I am thrilled to be part of a growing JCC that caters to a vibrant Jewish community. One of my first projects is to develop programming for the new sports courts on the Campus. I have many ideas for the courts that will be implemented in the upcoming months.” Tracy can be reached at (650) 852-3555 begin_of_the_skype_highlighting (650) 852-3555 end_of_the_skype_highlighting.
New Neighbor for the Campus
In September, Kehillah Jewish High School will move into its new home on 3900 Fabian Way, across the street from the Campus for Jewish Life. Kehillah Jewish High School’s decision to select this site was strategically important. The proximity of the organizations enables individual Jewish assets to be leveraged – creating new benefits for the entire Silicon Valley Jewish community.
On Sunday, March 6th, Kehillah Jewish High School is hosting a groundbreaking ceremony starting at 3:00 pm for school families and the greater community. The program will include Rabbi Reuven Greenvald, Head of School; the Mayor of Palo Alto, Jim Burch; and comments from Carol Saal, vice president and fundraising chair of the Campus for Jewish Life.
All are invited to attend this exciting event. Please join us in welcoming our new neighbors!
“Someone’s in the Kitchen” Jewish Home Signature Event
It’s an eating affair! The Jewish Home invites you to its annual benefit, “Someone’s in the Kitchen,” a sit-down dinner prepared by well-known chefs of the San Francisco/Bay Area and beyond. The evening will begin with a champagne and specialty drink reception, during which guests will be treated to scrumptious hors d’oeuvres prepared by chefs from some of the best eating establishments in the United States. Following this opportunity to nibble and mingle, the attendees will be seated at U-shaped stations of 16, where they will enjoy a three-course dinner specially designed and prepared by each one of the participating chefs.
The dinner is on Tuesday, March, 1, 2005 at Pier 30/32 (on the Embarcadero) in San Francisco. Proceeds raised from this event will support the Jewish Home’s Quality of Life Programs, with special emphasis on Nutritional Services. Mazel Tov!
Carol Saal to Receive Judith Chapman Women’s Leadership Award
On behalf of the Campus for Jewish Life, we extend a warm mazel tov to our own Carol Saal, for receiving the 2005 Judith Chapman Women’s Leadership Award. Each year, the Judith Chapman Women’s Leadership Fund of the Jewish Community Endowment Fund recognizes a woman who exemplifies significant and sustained volunteer leadership in the Jewish community, serves as a role model for others and values her Jewish identity and the importance of tzedakah in her life.
Carol was the founding president of the Campus for Jewish Life and served as board president for the past three years. Carol currently focuses on her role as chair of the $122 million Campus for Jewish Life capital campaign, and remains actively involved in all aspects of the Campus as vice president of the board.
The award will be presented on March 7th at the Jewish Community Federation’s “Power of One” Gala Dinner, which also features Gloria Steinem as guest speaker.
New Home for Stanford Hillel
The Campus also congratulates Hillel at Stanford on their new home, “The Harold and Libby Ziff Center for Jewish Life.” The Ziff Center is a restored 1899 home complete with a comfortable lounge, meeting rooms, wireless Internet access, a Judaic library and computer lab. This wonderful new resource is a great place for students to read, study, or hang out and socialize.
“The successful acquisition and remodeling of the Ziff Center represents the culmination of hard work by many volunteers, Stanford University, and John Arrillaga, the project’s general contractor. All of us look forward to the Ziff Center serving the Stanford Jewish community for many years to come,” said Stuart Klein, chair of the Hillel Building Committee.
Please join the community on Sunday, February 27th for the Ziff Center’s dedication ceremony at 2:00 pm at Kresge Auditorium.
It takes the support of our entire community to achieve the vision now taking shape for all of us. Help us rise to the challenge of building for the years ahead and in building a future for yourself, your children, parents and grandchildren – and join us by making the Campus a priority for giving.
