Campus for Jewish Life Begins City Approval Process. On June 14, the Campus for Jewish Life will formally begin the process of seeking necessary approvals from the City of Palo Alto through a presentation to the City Council. In recent weeks, CJL has reached out to the community through a series of meetings with neighborhood leaders and two public meetings sponsored by PAN (Palo Alto Neighborhoods) held on May 25 and June 5. Each meeting was attended by approximately 25 people and provided an opportunity for questions, discussion and input to both CJL and Bridge Housing (BUILD), the non-profit developer planning a residential development adjacent to the Campus for Jewish Life. The meetings featured the same presentation that will be reviewed at the City Council meeting. CJL’s conceptual site plan was featured in the March 31 edition of the Palo Alto Weekly.
The JCC’s annual fund-raising auction at Spago on May 16 was a great success, providing much needed support for summer day camp, special programs for senior citizens and other vital JCC services. Guest Auctioneer Assembly member Joe Simitian (featured at left with Harry Saal) reminded the bidders of his history as a JCC camp counselor and made his own invaluable contribution to the evening by encouraging support for the JCC. This year’s auction set a new record both for attendance and proceeds.
The JCC Has a New CEO. Following a nationwide search, the JCC has named Alan Sataloff as its new CEO. Alan brings 22 years of JCC experience to his new role, most recently serving six years as the executive director of the Weinstein JCC in Richmond, Virginia. He will join the JCC in July 2004. Peggy Mendelson, who has served as interim CEO since December 2003, will resume her role as an active JCC board member. We hope you will join us in welcoming Alan to our community and in thanking Peggy for her terrific work as interim CEO and continued dedication to the JCC’s future.
Zvi Weiss Is Joining the JCC Team. Well-known professional Jewish educator Zvi Weiss is the JCC’s new Director of Early Childhood and Family Education. Zvi was born in Los Angeles to Israeli parents. After completing his studies in Israel, he served in the Behavioral Science Division of the IDF and worked as a pre-school psychologist, Education Director of an institution for developmentally disabled children and coordinator of several pre-schools in Israel. Upon returning to the U.S., he held leadership positions at the Bureau of Jewish Education of Greater Los Angeles. In the Bay Area, Zvi served on the Executive Committee of the San Francisco Bureau of Jewish Education, was a founding board member of Kehillah High School, and was on the founding committee of Peninsula Parents Place. He currently runs the “Making Room for Shabbat” program for families of young children at Congregation Kol Emeth. Zvi’s 4 children have all attended the Palo Alto JCC’s T’enna pre-school.
